Within a two-kilometre square radius, couples and their photographers can choose between palatial Belle Époque hotels, private gardens overlooking the Mediterranean, and exclusive seaside clubs. This shortlist details the nine venues we recommend most often to the couples who commission us — and, for each one, what it means for your photographs. Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo
The flagship of the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), reopened in 2019 after a four-year renovation. The renovated central atrium with its zenithal glass roof gives one of the cleanest natural-light receptions on the Riviera. The Empire ballroom holds up to 400 seated guests, the more intimate Beaumarchais salon up to 80. The Place du Casino just outside doubles as a spectacular outdoor portrait set.
What this means for your photographs : strict dress code (black or anthracite only), no drones, no direct flash during the Louis XV three-Michelin-star dinner. The SBM Wedding Department coordinates accreditation directly with credited photographers.
Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carlo
The Hermitage, also part of the SBM portfolio, offers what is arguably the most photogenic indoor space in Monaco : the Salle Belle Époque, a glass-domed dining hall designed by Gustave Eiffel's atelier in 1900. Restored in 2024, its ironwork lattice and pink-orange stained glass create a unique cinematic atmosphere. Capacity : 200 seated, 350 cocktail. Pair it with the Limun Bar for cocktail receptions and the Crystal Terrace for ceremony.
Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort
Set on a peninsula in the Larvotto bay with 4 hectares of private gardens, the Monte-Carlo Bay offers a more contemporary, resort-style experience. Its lagoon pool with sandy beach, palm-lined gardens and event pavilions create flexible outdoor options that the historic palaces cannot match. The Salle d'Or is its largest indoor ballroom (600 guests), and unlike the Salle des Étoiles it is available all year.
What this means for your photographs : best afternoon light for portraits is on the western terrace from 5pm onward in summer. The lagoon reflects beautifully at golden hour. The hotel is one of the very few Monaco venues that allows licensed drone operation, subject to prefectoral authorisation.
Salle des Étoiles, Sporting Monte-Carlo
The largest seated capacity in the Principality, and the one venue on this list that is genuinely open to the sky : 973 square metres under a retractable roof that slides back over the tables, with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the Mediterranean. Capacity : 802 seated for dinner, 950 for a cocktail reception. Part of the Sporting Monte-Carlo complex on the Larvotto peninsula, a few minutes from Monte-Carlo Bay. Inaugurated by Josephine Baker in 1974, it is where the Bal de la Rose is held and where international artists play each summer.
What this means for your photographs : the roof opens during the season, so an evening reception here is effectively outdoors. Plan portraits before dinner — once the roof is back and the sky darkens, the room lights the tables and nothing else, which is beautiful for atmosphere and unforgiving for group shots. It is also the only venue in Monaco where a night sky is a usable background.
Le Meridien Beach Plaza
Larvotto beachfront property with a 200-metre private beach and direct access to the renovated Larvotto promenade. Two large ballrooms (Le Méditerranée and Le Riviera) plus an open-air rooftop deck. Capacity up to 1200 standing. More accessible price point than the SBM palaces, suitable for medium-budget destination weddings (300-500k EUR all-in range). Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo
Smaller, family-run luxury hotel with a strong design identity (interiors by Jacques Garcia). The Lobby Bar lit by a chandelier of 60000 Swarovski crystals is one of the strongest portrait backgrounds in Monaco. The Karl Lagerfeld pool deck on the seventh floor offers a private rooftop cocktail option with full sea view. Ideal for intimate weddings of 30 to 100 guests. Yacht Club de Monaco
Designed by Lord Foster and inaugurated in 2014, the YCM offers a fully modernist contrast to the Belle Époque palaces. Curved white volumes, panoramic terraces over the Port Hercule, capacity 600 cocktail. Strict membership/event access rules : the bride or groom must either be a member, or be sponsored by a member, or use one of the small number of slots allocated to external events.
Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild (Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat)
Strictly speaking outside Monaco (15-minute drive via the Bas Corniche), but consistently requested by international clients for portrait sessions or full ceremonies. Nine themed French gardens overlooking both bays of Cap-Ferrat. Access for photography is tightly regulated by the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Allow 4-6 weeks for permit application.
Private villas of Roquebrune and Cap Martin
For couples who prefer absolute privacy over palace prestige, the private villas of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (5 minutes from Monaco) offer estate weddings with full property privatisation. Which of these venues are outdoors
"Outdoor" means very different things in a principality this dense, and only one room on this list genuinely opens overhead. Ranked by how much of your day can actually happen in the open air :
- Salle des Étoiles — the only venue here that opens to the sky : 973 square metres under a retractable roof that slides back over the tables. The trade-off is the season : unlike the Salle d'Or, it is not available all year.
- Monte-Carlo Bay — 4 hectares of private gardens, a lagoon pool with a sandy beach and event pavilions. The most flexible open-air options of any property here, and the historic palaces cannot match them.
- Le Meridien Beach Plaza — a 200-metre private beach and an open-air rooftop deck.
- Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild — nine themed French gardens overlooking both bays of Cap-Ferrat, a 15-minute drive from the Principality.
- Yacht Club de Monaco — panoramic terraces over Port Hercule.
- Hotel Metropole — the Karl Lagerfeld pool deck on the seventh floor, better suited to a rooftop cocktail than to a full ceremony.
The Hotel de Paris and the Hermitage are the deliberate exceptions : both are indoor, but under glass — a zenithal atrium roof and the dome built by Gustave Eiffel's atelier. You keep the daylight and lose the weather risk, which is what makes them the safer choice outside high summer.
Which ones you can have to yourselves
Couples ask for an exclusive venue constantly, and the word covers two very different realities in Monaco :
- Full privatisation — the private villas of Roquebrune and Cap Martin are the only option on this list where you take the entire property, for 50 to 150 guests, caterers, security and parking included.
- Restricted access — the Yacht Club de Monaco is exclusive in the opposite sense : the bride or groom must be a member, or be sponsored by one. Settle that before anything else, because no budget replaces it.
The palace hotels privatise rooms, not buildings. You will have the ballroom to yourselves, not the address — worth knowing before you promise your guests otherwise. Access to the Villa Ephrussi gardens is a third case again : tightly regulated, and granted by the Académie des Beaux-Arts rather than by a sales office.

What to know before you book
A wedding in Monaco comes with a few specifics worth settling early — they shape both your timeline and your photography :
- Monaco is a sovereign principality : a photographer's business licence from France or Italy does not apply there. For one-off events, a professional declaration via the Direction du Travail may be requested by the venue.
- All venue accesses require pre-event coordination with the establishment's security desk.
- Drones are strictly forbidden without prefectoral authorisation (P-zone airspace).
- French is the working language for venue coordinators ; English is widely used but contracts are usually drafted in French.
Questions couples ask us most
Can we actually be married legally in Monaco?
Only if one of you is a resident. Monaco is a sovereign state, not a French commune, and a civil marriage at the Mairie requires a genuine connection to the Principality. Nearly every international couple therefore holds the legal formality at home and the celebration — symbolic ceremony and reception — in Monaco. Guests see no difference. Where can we hold a religious ceremony?
Monaco Cathedral (Notre-Dame-Immaculée), where Grace Kelly rests, is the most requested — but a Catholic ceremony needs a marriage file prepared through your home parish and approved by the diocese, so allow six to twelve months. It is the longest lead time of the whole wedding. For a close-family ceremony, the Sainte-Devote Chapel is smaller and more intimate.
Which venue takes the most guests?
The Salle des Étoiles at the Sporting seats the most : 802 for dinner, 950 for a cocktail. Monte-Carlo Bay's Salle d'Or takes 600 seated and is open all year, while Le Meridien Beach Plaza goes to 1200 standing. At the other end, the Metropole suits 30 to 100 and the Sainte-Devote Chapel less still.
What should we budget?

What is the best month?
September to early October: warm sea, softer light, fewer crowds. Avoid May, when the Grand Prix closes the city and rates peak. The light drives your timeline more than couples expect — in September the sun drops behind the Tête de Chien around 19:30, giving roughly forty minutes of gold over Port Hercule, whereas in June the same moment falls closer to 21:00 and pushes dinner later.
