How to Get Married in Monaco (2026 Guide)

The residency rule, symbolic ceremonies, churches and timings. What international couples actually need to settle before booking anything in Monaco.

How to Get Married in Monaco (2026 Guide)

Monaco is one of the most photographed wedding destinations in Europe, and one of the most misunderstood. Couples arrive expecting to sign a register at the Mairie with a sea view, and discover that the Principality applies some of the strictest marriage rules on the continent. This guide explains what is actually possible, what it costs in time, and how most international couples structure their Monaco wedding.

The one rule that changes everything: residency

Monaco is a sovereign state, not a French commune. A civil marriage at the Mairie de Monaco requires a genuine connection to the Principality — in practice, that at least one of the spouses is a resident, with the corresponding residency documentation and a publication of banns before the ceremony.

The consequence is simple and it catches most couples by surprise: if neither of you lives in Monaco, you will not be legally married in Monaco. Requirements are updated periodically, so confirm your own situation directly with the Mairie de Monaco before booking anything.

How international couples actually get married in Monaco

The structure used by nearly every non-resident couple is a two-part wedding.

  • The legal ceremony at home. A short civil formality in your own country, often a few days or weeks earlier, with two witnesses. This is the part that produces the marriage certificate.
  • The celebration in Monaco. A symbolic ceremony — officiated by a celebrant, a family member or a religious minister — followed by the reception. This is the part everyone remembers, and the part that gets photographed.

Nothing about the day looks different to your guests. The vows, the aisle, the first dance, the toasts all happen exactly as planned. The paperwork is simply handled elsewhere.

Religious ceremonies

Monaco Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée)

The most requested religious venue in the Principality, and the resting place of Grace Kelly. A Catholic ceremony requires a full marriage file prepared through your home parish, transferred with the approval of the diocese. Start this process six to twelve months ahead — it is the longest lead time of your entire wedding.

Sainte-Dévote Chapel

Small, intimate and deeply symbolic for Monegasques, dedicated to the patron saint of the Principality. Capacity is limited, which makes it ideal for a close-family ceremony rather than a large congregation.

Where to hold the reception

Monaco concentrates an unusual density of venues within roughly two square kilometres, which is exactly why it works so well for a destination wedding: guests never spend more than ten minutes in a car.

We have detailed each of them — capacity, access rules, light through the day — in our guide to the best wedding venues in Monaco, covering the Hôtel de Paris, the Hermitage, Monte-Carlo Bay, the Métropole, the Yacht Club de Monaco and the private villas of Cap-Ferrat and Roquebrune.

When to get married in Monaco

PeriodConditionsOur view
MayGrand Prix — city closed, prices peakAvoid unless the race is the point
JuneLong days, warm evenings, high demandThe classic choice, book a year ahead
July - AugustVery hot, crowded, peak ratesWorkable with an evening ceremony
September - early OctoberWarm sea, softer light, fewer crowdsOur recommendation
November - MarchMild but unpredictable, venues quietExcellent value for small weddings

The light matters more than couples expect. In September the sun sets around 19:30 and drops behind Tête de Chien, giving roughly forty minutes of gold across Port Hercule. In June the same effect happens closer to 21:00, which pushes your dinner later.

Getting guests around

Monaco is vertical. Distances that look walkable on a map involve tunnels, lifts and steep gradients — difficult in heels, impossible for elderly guests. Plan transport as part of the wedding, not as an afterthought.

Most couples book a chauffeured car for the couple and a van for the family. Our guides to renting a Rolls-Royce with a chauffeur and the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 explain the difference: the Rolls is for the arrival everyone photographs, the Maybach for comfort between venues.

Photography: the constraint nobody mentions

Monaco restricts commercial photography in several public areas, and each palace hotel applies its own rules about tripods, drones and access to terraces. A photographer who works in the Principality regularly already knows which permissions to request and which corners to avoid at 18:00 when the light goes flat.

Our studio covers weddings across the Principality and the Riviera — see our photography services.

A realistic timeline

  • 12 months: venue and date. The palace hotels release Saturdays first.
  • 9 to 12 months: religious file if you want the Cathedral. This is the bottleneck.
  • 6 months: photographer, transport, florist. Confirm your legal ceremony at home.
  • 3 months: guest logistics, hotel blocks, dinner layout.
  • 1 month: timings walked through venue by venue with light in mind.

FAQ — Weddings in Monaco

Can foreigners legally marry in Monaco?

Generally not, unless at least one spouse is a resident of the Principality and meets the residency and publication requirements. Non-resident couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Monaco. Confirm your case with the Mairie de Monaco.

Can we get married on a yacht in Monaco?

You can hold a symbolic ceremony and a reception on a chartered yacht. It will not be a civil marriage, and the legal ceremony still needs to happen elsewhere.

How much does a Monaco wedding cost?

It depends almost entirely on the venue and the guest count. We break the numbers down in our dedicated guide to how much a wedding in Monaco costs.

Is Monaco suitable for a small wedding?

Very much so. Small weddings and elopements work particularly well here, because the setting does the work that decoration would have to do elsewhere. See our guide to eloping in Monaco.

How many days should guests stay?

Three nights is the sweet spot: arrival, wedding day, and a recovery day for a boat trip or a lunch in Èze. Anything shorter and guests spend the wedding tired from travelling.
